First we assessed the condition of the roof and the type of moss we were dealing with, and then gave the customer several options to take care of their roof. The customer decided to go with our recommendation to do a chemical treatment before removing any moss. After a few weeks the moss dies off and the roots let go of the shingles, making it much easier to rinse off the moss with not much more pressure than a garden hose. We always use either zinc or chlorine to treat the moss depending on the the moss or the type of roof.
Our goal always is to extend the life of the roof, and this 2 part approach is one of our favorite. Of course the best way is preventative treatment, but this is Oregon and moss grows quick.
